Fix: Windows Cumulative Preview Update for 22H2 Failing in March 2025 (Access Denied / Failed to Apply Updates)

If you are trying to install the March 2025 Cumulative Preview Update for Windows 10 or 11 version 22H2 and are running into the "Windows Failed to Apply Updates" error or seeing Access Denied entries in Event Viewer, you are not alone. This issue is affecting many users—especially those running third-party antivirus solutions such as Malwarebytes.

While Windows Update Troubleshooter or Windows Recovery might seem like helpful tools, they often do not resolve the issue and may create new problems or reset parts of your system. The fix below is a safer and more non-intrusive solution that has worked consistently in our testing.

Why This Happens

This problem appears to stem from antivirus or endpoint security software blocking the update’s installation process—particularly access to certain system-level files or services. Antivirus programs often interfere with update staging or tamper protection, resulting in failed update attempts.

Step-by-Step Fix

Step 1: Backup your antivirus license keys.
You will need to uninstall your antivirus software, so make sure you have the license or activation key saved before proceeding.

Step 2: Completely uninstall your antivirus software.
Use Control Panel or the vendor’s dedicated removal tool if one is available. This ensures all services and background protections are stopped.

Step 3: Restart your computer.
A clean reboot will ensure all antivirus processes are fully removed from memory.

Step 4: Clear the Windows Update download folder.
Navigate to:
C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download

Delete everything inside this folder.
Do not delete the folder itself, and avoid touching anything outside of the Download subfolder.
If you get a permissions error, restart your computer and try again immediately while in airplane mode or with the internet disconnected.

Step 5: Check for updates.
Go to Settings > Windows Update and click Check for updates.
The March 2025 Cumulative Preview Update for 22H2 should now install properly.

Step 6: Wait for the update to install.
This particular update takes longer than usual to apply. A reboot will be required.

Optional: Check for firmware or optional driver updates.
In some cases, a firmware update shows up alongside the cumulative update and may help resolve the issue long-term.

Final Notes

After successfully installing the update, you can reinstall your antivirus software and re-enter your license key.

We have seen this issue commonly when Malwarebytes, Avast, or other security platforms are installed. If the update continues to fail even after following these steps, it is worth contacting the antivirus vendor’s support for further assistance.
